While there are plenty of options for headwear, baseball caps and casual hats just won’t live up to the needs of a runner. So, when considering your next running hat for hot weather, keep in mind the following:
- Additional UV protection. When running long distances in unknown territory, or for a mid-day marathon, choose hats that boast a UPF rating. This will help runners escape harmful UV rays and sunburn.
- Cooling properties. Whether it is synthetic, moisture wicking materials or mesh side panels, running hats should be designed to cool.
- Reflective Elements. While it is not absolutely necessary, we always look for a hat that also adds an element of visibility. Stay safe during low light situations with reflective elements.
- A comfortable fit for the journey. A great running hat will be designed with a slim profile, unnoticeable seems and without obtrusions.
Regardless of your choice in a running hat, always also consider using sunscreen to protect yourself during race day. However, because this can run into your eyes during the trek, one of the best running hats can step in.
