Best Lightweight Hiking Binoculars | Set Your Sights on A Better Hike

Last updated on October 24th, 2021 at 01:39 pm

The great outdoors are filled with experiences to be had and memories to be made. And, along the way, binoculars can help even the most inexperienced hikers feel like the king of the mountain. So, for birdwatching, sightseeing, and teaching kids along the way, lightweight binoculars can be a great tool for the trails. Regardless of where you’re headed, the best lightweight hiking binoculars will allow you to do this with ease and without extra weight.

What Makes a Great Binocular for Hiking?

The last thing you want is to be weighed down by your gear. But aside from being lightweight and easy to carry, there are several important features that your new hiking binoculars will need. Before you commit to a particular pair, be sure to check out our guide in order to get crisp views.

  1. Magnification: Listed as the first number in a binocular’s description (i.e., 8x42). Magnification represents how many times closer an object will be presented to you through the lens. Here bigger is not better, as the magnification number rises, your vision will be shaky with each breathe. Unless you will be using a tripod for stability, which is unlikely on the trails. We find that 8 or 10 magnification is perfectly reasonable for hiking.
  2. Objective Lens Diameter: Also known as the aperture, this measurement is the second number in the binocular’s description (after the magnification). As this number rises, so does the size and weight of your binoculars.  An aperture number of 25 or 42 are light enough to carry around and still offer excellent clarity.
  3. Lightweight: If you have landed here you are likely heading out on a trail and know that light gear is ideal for the trek. Well, you’re in luck, as mentioned above, there are plenty of options that are lightweight while offering a professional level of clarity. For hiking, binoculars should weigh less than 2 pounds.
  4. Dust Proof: Along the trail you are likely to encounter plenty of obstacles. And on hot days or while in your pack, dust can enter your binoculars and get trapped inside. To avoid the annoying phenomenon of cloudy vision and ruined binos, choose a pair that are listed as ‘dust proof.’ This may also be listed as ‘o ring sealed,’ ‘nitrogen gas purged,’ or ‘hermetically sealed.’
  5. Moisture Resistant: As well as dust, moisture can be a real problem while hiking. Whether a spring shower or morning fog, moisture can easily sneak in and fog your lenses making them useless. For hiking, choose a set of binoculars that are waterproof.

Our Favorite Lightweight Binoculars for Hiking Are...

After checking out a huge range of hiking binoculars, we decided that some of them were worth their weight. While there are many excellent binos on the market, it is hard to ignore the excellence of our finalists.

Best overall: Zeiss 8×25 Terra ED

Our second favorite: Vortex Optics Diamondback HD

Our favorite on a budget: Apeman 12×25 Compact

While any of the above are a great choice, check out our post below to view all of our contenders in more detail.

Comparison Table of Lightweight Hiking Binoculars

First, we’ve placed all of our favorites into the table here. For quick reference and current pricing, follow the links below. However, we’ll go over our findings in the reviews to follow as well.

All of our options look pretty similar at first glance, however, we’ll go over what sets them apart below.

1. Zeiss 8x25 Terra ED

First is our best overall for the trails. With extremely fast focus, Zeiss 8×25 Terra ED are great for spontaneous moments. For those fleeting moments with the local fauna, hikers will greatly appreciate binoculars that perform on a dime. And with loads of other features for performance, these made it to the top of our gear list.

Waterproof up to 3.3 feet

First, no matter how much we would like, we can’t predict the weather 100% of the time. However, the Terra ED offer an outstanding level of water-resistance to protect your investment.

With a waterproof rating of 100 mbar, which means they will withstand water pressure equal to that at a depth of 3.3 feet.

If you are going to be tackling a variety of locations, this level of waterproofing will be ideal. So, whether you encounter a light shower or lots of water crossings, your binoculars are protected.

Furthermore, Zeiss goes one step further with their Lotutec coating across the lens that clears quickly after being exposed to water. We found this to leave a crisp, clear view regardless of the weather.

Clear Image

One things hikers love about the Terra ED is their crystal clear view. Their design tackles all aspects of viewing distanced objects, and the result offers utmost clarity and magnification.

With an 8x magnification, they aren’t so magnified that you begin to struggle using them while moving.

However, they do still provide more than enough close-up detail for an accurate view! At 1000 meters, you get a 119-meter field of view so the distance is pretty generous.

What’s more, they boast an easy to grip focus wheel that makes getting into focus effortlessly smooth and fast.

Lightweight and Portable Elements

In addition to its fantastic performance, this set stood out as compact and lightweight without compromising on the clarity or quality.

And, at 10.9 oz the Terra ED is one of the lightest for this quality.

Moreover, the binoculars come with a carry case to keep them protected while in your pack.

However, they also have a wide, comfortable neck strap for the trail. Which, given how lightweight they are, makes this set a breeze to wear all day.

2. Vortex Optics Diamondback HD

Next is our runner up. We love the Vortex Optics Diamondback HD for their excellent clarity. If you want to feel like you’re viewing something up close with your own unobstructed eyes, these will notdisappoint!

Incredible Clarity

All too often, binoculars will fail to impress with their clarity of view. However, looking through these compact and lightweight binoculars is like a completely new experience.

Thanks to the vastly impressive clarity that comes from HD BaK-4 glass, the Diamonback HD is super impressive.

We found the view to be sharp and crystal clear. And, with 10x magnification it truly feels like it brings things closer.

Not only do you get an incredibly clear picture, but this pair also translates color like no other. Hikers can expect a clear view with lifelike, correct color.

Great For Sunny Days

If you have ever tried to get a decent view on a bright day, you know the frustration of refracting light that distorts the picture! But that isn’t a problem with the Diamondback binoculars.

Thanks to a superior multi-coated lens, the Diamondback delivers a crystal clear view even on the brightest of days.

As a result, this pair is ideal for harsh light found at sunrise, sunset, and hot days at the height of summer. And, we found this anti-reflective coating to deter light leaving you with a brilliantly clear picture.

Furthermore, this lens is treated with an additional coating that prevents scratches.

Comfortable To Use

Finally, this pair is one of the most comfortable to use. A lot of hikers find binoculars to be hard and cumbersome when held against the eyes and the face. But it appears that every aspect of this has been tackled in this innovative design.

Impressively, the Diamonback HD are superbly comfortable thanks to an adjustable eyecup.

Here, the eyecups twist in both directions so that you can adjust the binoculars to your unique contours. What’s more, even if you are wearing eyeglasses, these still fit perfectly. No need to remove your specs!

Furthermore, even at this low price-point the Apeman has a great level of view customization. For instance, you adjust each eye separately then for the rest of the hike you just need to use the central focus wheel. As a result, hikers will find an excellent natural feel and high quality color.

With 12 x magnification, they are slightly stronger than we would normally recommend for a lightweight pair. But, with the excellent focus and clarity, this additional zoom doesn’t cause any problems with steadiness. Here, you get the best of everything!

The Apeman 12×25 features a Bak-4 lens which offers impeccable clarity.

Here, the Monarch 5’s eyecups are fully adjustable. As a result, we found this pair molds perfectly to the custom contours of your face.

Furthermore, the super-soft feel won’t cause any irritation and nestles nicely against the eyes. Additionally, the Monarch 5 is also fitted with an exceptionally smooth focus wheel that makes the entire experience enjoyable.

And, when you are traveling, the flip-up lens cap is a nice additional touch.

Before Picking Your Hiking Binoculars

While there are so many options, it can be quite confusing to figure out which options to go for. However, when hiking the trails, have your sights set on binoculars that feature:

  • 8 or 10 magnification. You can find this as the first number on the label (i.e., 8x42). Unless you will be using a tripod in the forest, anything higher than 8 or 10 magnification will result in a very shaky image that’s difficult to see.
  • A low objective lens diameter (aperature). As this number rises so will the binoculars weight. So, for the trails, a 25 or 42 aperature number is ideal. You will find this is the second number in the binocular’s description after the magnification.
  • A lightweight design. With the above measurements in mind, there are plenty of options/sizes that can easily be carried on the trails while offering a fantastic level of clarity. We look for binoculars weighing under 2 lbs.
  • A dust proof design: Dust can easily get trapped inside and produce a cloudy view for the life of the set.  Dust proof options will have attributes like ‘o ring sealed,’ ‘nitrogen gas purged,’ or ‘hermetically sealed’ listed in their descriptions.
  • Moisture resistance. For hiking, choose a set of binoculars that are waterproof to combat fog, showers, and the dreaded puddle drop.

Many options on the market are fantastic, however not all incorporate all of these above criteria. We found some of the best available binoculars in the above post. However, of all these criteria, the most important will be that your set is lightweight and resistant to moisture. And you’ll be golden on the trails.

Beautiful Views Await

Whether it’s a short hike or a multi-day backpacking journey, binoculars can create an immersive experience. When you find the right pair, you’re going to want a pair for the whole family. And, because there are so many great options in a variety of prices, the kids can get a great view too. Regardless of the set you choose, make sure its lightweight so you can stay focused on enjoying the hike. Because, once you’ve found the perfect gear, there’s no telling how many new adventurers are on the horizon.
