What Makes a Great Lantern for Camping?
There are several factors to keep in mind when selecting the best lantern to suit your needs. And, a good light can make all the difference at camp. Before we consider purchasing a lantern, it must pass the test for these features:
- Burn Time: This is a measure of a lantern’s battery life. Most lanterns have three light strengths (lumens) which usually accompany the expected burn time with each level. We have only ranked lanterns with the best battery life.
- Lightweight: Car campers will not be bothered with a lantern over 8 ounces. However, for backpackers, the lightest lantern will serve them well.
- Rechargeable: If you’re looking for an eco-friendly lantern, a rechargeable option will help you accomplish this. Additionally, rechargeable lights are able to be recharged with a portable charger port, whereas rechargeable AA batteries, for instance, need a wall outlet to recharge. We prefer rechargeable options, but we’ve included a couple great lanterns that are not rechargeable, as they have other amazing features.
- Functionality: Most lanterns function just for light, while some offer charge ports for phones. We like this option best just in case we need to charge up GPS devices.

4. Goal Zero Lighthouse Core
With 4400 mAh, the Goal Zero Lighthouse Core features up to 350 hours of burn time with 430 lumens, or just under 40 watts. It also provides a USB output for charging your devices. Which is especially helpful for GPS watches and phones, or even other lanterns.
The Goal Zero Lighthouse Core is a great option for those looking for an all-purpose base camp lantern.

Two Ways To Charge

Most lanterns only have the ability to adjust their lighting with the push of a button. The Lighthouse Core, however, offers a unique feature allowing you to set the brightness to your choosing.
For instance, it has a low / high switch with a rotating knob that gradually increases, allowing you to set the brightness to your desired level.
As a result, with only one side lit, this lantern can burn from 8 to 350 hours depending on its brightness. With both sides lit, it can burn from 4 to 200 hundred hours. Again, depending on its level of brightness.
Because you totally control the brightness, the dimmer the light the longer it will last. Hence, the extreme range in burn hours.

Before Picking Your Battery Operated Camp Lanterns
From ease of use to durability and functionality to weight, different lanterns offer something for everyone. Before choosing your favorite, think through how you may predominantly use your camping lantern. We judge camp lights by the following criteria, your camp lantern should:
- Have a long burn time. A measure of a lantern’s battery life, this should be at least 1-3 hours per day of camping for sufficient utility.
- Be lightweight. For backpackers, the lighter, the better. We look for lanterns lighter than 8 ounces.
- Be rechargeable (if you’d like). Ideally, a lantern that contains a rechargeable lithium ion battery will allow you to get many years of use out of it. Some campers may prefer to use their own rechargeable batteries.
- Have a high level of functionality. We prefer lanterns that can be used to charge phones and GPS watches while we sleep. However, we do also enjoy completely unplugging at camp and understand if you don’t need this function.
- Feature a rugged design. your lantern should be able to take a few hits. Especially if you’re traveling with children.
