While the weather may change, runners are still braving the elements. However, staying fit during the winter doesn’t have to sting, and chapped cheeks can be a thing of the past. In fact, having been diagnosed with asthma as a young teen, I’ve tried my fair share of remedies for running in the cold. Hands down, the best approach is a running mask, even if you don’t suffer from asthma. If you’re one of the many runners that doesn’t enjoy the cold sting of winter air in your sinuses, we’ve found several contenders for the best cold weather running mask to don during those invigorating winter runs.
What Makes A Great Running Mask for Cold Weather?
We’ve all gotten used to wearing masks on a daily basis, but winter running masks are so much different. There are several things that you should look out for when choosing your running mask; first, it needs to be breathable and comfortable. We put many different options to the test and have found the following conditions need to be considered before choosing your mask.
- Proper fit: From personal experience, running with a tight balaclava can cause headaches and restrict breathing. However, it can be tricky to find the right size, as most are ‘one size fits all.’ Our favorites below have the best stretch for the most promising range of head sizes.
- Materials for the conditions: In the depths of winter, fleece is a popular option for runners. However, merino wool, neoprene and polypropylene are great options for mild winter days or early spring. Plus, all of these materials will help wick moisture away from your nose and mouth.
- Coverage options: Whether you’re looking for just mouth and nose or full-face coverage, running masks come in a variety of styles. Models that focus on neck coverage are also a great option, especially in the biting cold.

Sentence introducing the table, all pictures names and links must change below
1. Under Armour ColdGear Infrared Balaclava
First up is our favorite full-coverage mask, the Under Armour Coldgear Infrared Balaclava is a super comfortable design.
We loved that it protects all of the most sensitive areas of the face, neck, and ears from wind burn. In addition, it is easy to convert to just nose and mouth as you start to heat up longer into your run.
Infrared Technology
Under Armour’s infrared technology locks in body heat, keeping you warm at all times.
We learned that this works through the use of a thermo-conductive inner lining which absorbs and retains it inside the running mask.
Additionally, we found this lining to be soft and comfortable. And, while you may be prone to overheating while running, this technology still allows for airflow as well as wicking away moisture.
Variable Cover
Depending on how extreme the running conditions are, you may require full face coverage or partial.
Runners will love the option to easily adjust the amount of coverage.
Even while in motion, it’s easy to pull the bottom portion over your mouth and nose or cover around the entire head.
However, if conditions are mild, there is still the option to pull the lower part of the mask below the chin.
Hygienic
While some masks require washing after every run, this Under Armour balaclava features an anti-odor technology that keeps the mask fresher for longer.
Of course, it will eventually need to be washed, just markedly less often. When it is time to clean the mask, it can be popped into the washing machine with your other athletic laundry. If it’s grab-and-go convenience you’re after, this is a great choice.

2. Tough Headware Balaclava Ski Mask
Next up is our favorite for those on a budget. While most options are relatively inexpensive, the value for the extremely low price tag on the Tough Headware Balaclava Ski Mask is out of this world.
We found the Tough Headwear balaclava to be beautifully lightweight and flexible. Especially around the face cuttout and seams.
Versatile Design
A running mask is almost certainly needed when the weather gets colder but you might not always need or want full coverage. When the icy winds hit, you’ll probably want to cover your whole head and face. Especially if you’ll be stopping at crosswalks or passing long stretches of open ground without cover.
The great thing about the Tough Headwear balaclava is that it can be worn in several different ways. It can function as a helmet liner, a neck warmer, or a full face mask, giving you a true piece of multi-purpose gear.
For instance, some competitors have a very small and tight eye cutout, where pulling the entire mask down around your neck is impossible. Conversely, the Tough Headware Mask is flexible and truly convertible.
Breathable Materials
Finally, if you have ever worn goggles or glasses with a mask, you have experienced how quickly they can fog up. However, when a mask has good breathability, like this one, misty running glasses will be a thing of the past.
The Tough Headwear ski mask is made from a breathable fabric with mesh panels that serve to improve air circulation. Not only will this prevent fogging but it will also stop moisture from building up inside the mask.
Comfortable Fit
While you want your running mask to be as well-fitting as possible to avoid shifting during your work out, you also need it to be comfortable and not feel too restricting. In the case of the Tough Headwear ski mask, you are getting the best of both worlds.
The Tough Headware running mask offers a perfectly snug fit. The soft fabric feels great against the skin and irritation is unlikely. What’s more, the mask will stay in place as you move around, even on those faster, more demanding runs.
Pros and Cons of the Tough Headware Balaclava Ski Mask
Tough Headware Balaclava Ski Mask PROS

Additionally, we love this for under our ski helmet and every snow activity during winter. View more specifications, including current pricing, here: Tough Headware Balaclava Ski Mask
3. Tough Headware Winter Fleece Neck Gaiter
For lightweight coverage that is surprisingly warm, the Tough Headware Winter Fleece Neck Gaiter is one of the best options on the market. We appreciated the fantastic airflow through the perforated mouth area.
Additionally, this is a perfect option for those of us running with long hair in a ponytail.
Thermal Lining
While it may not offer full head protection, what it does offer is very toasty.
Because the Tough Headwear gaiter is fully lined for thermal protection, your most vulnerable parts will be kept protected. Additionally, the material retains body heat around the ears and nose while remaining super breathable.
What’s more, the soft fleece material is an ideal material for the most cutting winds and wicks moisture very efficiently.
Lightweight Fit
In a lot of cases, you will need to use something heavier if you want to stay warm but that certainly isn’t the case with the Tough Headwear neck gaiter. The material is beautifully lightweight and doesn’t feel bulky around the neck.
Once on, you barely notice it is there and you don’t feel as though airflow is restricted.
And, while it may look loose on the model, we found the fit to be snug and comfortable even when turning to look before crossing roads.
We found this to be the most comfortable for heavy breathing. And it is a much better option when compared to other similar face masks with a nose slit that chaffs and irritates the face.
Versatile Function
Finally, one of the best things about this neck gaiter is that it can be worn in one of two ways. Of course, it can be worn as pictured to warm the air before it enters your nose. However, it is just as useful when worn around the neck and keeps the chill from creeping into your shirt. We found this to be very useful on casual walks in fall as well.
While this running mask does not offer full head coverage, it would work very well with a hat and can be used with a helmet and goggles.
Tough Headware Winter Fleece Neck Gaiter Pros and Cons
Tough Headware Winter Fleece Neck Gaiter PROS
- Super soft
- Lightweight
- Breathable
Tough Headware Winter Fleece Neck Gaiter CONS

Who Would This Running Mask be Perfect For?
The Tough Headwear fleece neck gaiter would be the perfect running mask for anyone who likes something a little more lightweight and well fitting that doesn’t compromise on warmth.
4. Outdoor Research Ninjaclava
Another contender for full coverage is the Outdoor Research Ninjaclava. It boasts a slip on design that fits tightly to the head without feeling uncomfortable. For a secure fit, the Outdoor Research Ninjaclava is a superior option. Additionally, it offers a generous area for the eyes, which makes it easy to pull down as a neck gaiter.
Works With Eye Goggles
Depending on just how cold the weather is and if there is an icy wind, you may require a deeper level of protection for the eyes. In this case, many runners will opt for eye goggles or sun glasses but these can be tricky to wear at the same time as a running mask.
One of the most notable features of the Outdoor Research Ninjaclava is that it comes with silicone printing around the eyes.
This means that your mask will stay put around your eye goggles without slipping. However, we have found that it still fogs up glasses, unless you pull the mask below your nose.
Retractable Hood
While this is an extraordinarily warm running mask, you may find that the heat becomes a little too much Continuing to run with such heat can become very uncomfortable. However, the Ninjaclava comes with a retractable hood which allows you to vent excess heat and improve air flow.
We did find that the stretchy poly-blend fabric lacked the optimal amount of breathability. But, it made up for it with the ability to lower its hood easily.
Easy To Clean
One of the drawbacks of having something less breathable is that you are likely to sweat more. While you’ll definitely be kept warm, which fulfils the main requirement for a running mask, you may find that this mask needs to be washed more frequently. Fortunately, the Ninjaclava is machine washable and very easy to clean.
What’s more, you will benefit from a moisture wicking material, so while moisture may build up inside the mask, it will be quickly absorbed, keeping you more comfortable on your run.

This adjustability means that your mask will not slip or move while you are running. Even for people with much smaller heads, there is a good amount of give, up to 3.93 inches, making this mask suitable for everybody.

One of the first things that caught our eye about this running mask was how many different ways it can be worn. While you may need full head coverage on those extra cold days, at the beginning and end of winter, you might not need something quite as drastic.
The Purjoy balaclava can be worn in six different ways according to the manufacturer. ‘Hairnet’ and ‘hat’ aside, you are most likely to wear this as full head and face coverage, as a neck gaiter, or just as a mask.

Before Picking Your Running Mask
Choosing any running gear can be quite a tough decision when it carries the possibility of hindering your favorite passtime. However, if you have breathing issues like asthma, just hate that winter burn in your throat and lungs, or are sick of chapped cheeks, a running mask is a great investment. In fact, we think it’s so important, we wrote this article to help. Before looking for your cold weather running mask, consider these few simple points and you’ll be running in comfort soon enough. Choose a runing mask that offers:
- Proper fit. A tight balaclava can cause headaches and restrict breathing. Choose a few styles to try on at home and make sure its not pulling on your eyes or smooshing your nose.
- Materials for the conditions. Fleece or Nylon/Spandex are popular options. However, merino wool is great for year round sports.
- Coverage options. Running masks come in a variety of styles, and you may not know what to choose. But, consider what you may already by wearing. A scarf and earmuffs can be replaced by a lower face mask. And, a running hat can be replaced by a full coverage balaclava.
I’ve learned from personal experience, that these can run really small, and I have a pretty average-sized head for a female runner. The options we chose for our favorites are all very reliable compared to what I purchased at a big-box sporting good store. Regardless of what you choose, don’t hesitate to donate one that is too tight, it is not worth this headache to run in a tight facemask.
Conquer the Cold
Just because the weather has turned and things are a little chillier, your fitness routine shouldn’t suffer. And, we all know, runners are some of the toughest people out there. SO, since it’s pretty obvious nothing can stop youl, suit up to keep yourself safe, and consider a set of ice spikes or running snowshoes while you’re getting ready for the winter trails. But first, by choosing a great running mask you’ll prevent chapped skin and breathe easier on the run. So get moving!
