Running gives you a great freedom and boost of endorphins, however a sad pair of shorts can make or break the experience. Proper running shorts are breathable, allow ease of movement, and stay put on the waist. As a result, some runners find a certain style of short can cut time off their splits. So, whether you’re running on a treadmill, track, or the trails, we’ll help you find the best running shorts for women.
What Makes a Great Women's Running Short?
Running shorts are truly a balance between form and function. However, if they’re not designed with movement and distance in mind, a pair of shorts will hinder your stride. So, while keeping this in mind, we also judge all of our contenders thoroughly by the following features:
- Lightweight: Good running shorts will be lightweight and breathable materials. This is a main component that sets them apart from other athletic gear.
- Ease of movement: Regardless of if you’re going the distance or introducing sprinting intervals, running shorts should allow for lots of movement. Which is why so many of them are a bit billowy.
- Secure pockets: Lightweight shorts won’t be designed to hold much of anything unless secured tightly. But, if you’d like to leave your running belt at home, opt for a pair with a few zippered or deep pockets.
- Style/Fit: Women’s running shorts can be broken into a three categories; compression (or tights), split seam, and v-notch. All of which are up to personal preference.
- Built in liner: A built in brief liner allows for maximum breathability and moisture wicking. Not only that, liners reduce a fair amount of chaffing that regular underwear create while running.
- Durable materials: While it’s tempting to choose any old pair of shorts, some are more durable than others. We’ve chosen our favorites with this key characteristic in mind. Running shorts can be a good investment in your overall training regimen.

Stay Put Design
By far one of the most irritating things about running shorts is their tendency to ride up on the waist. However, with the Nike Tempo, we found that this is not the case.
For its size, the simple waistband of the Tempo is surprisingly adequate to keep these shorts where they ought to be.
Moreover, their lightweight and billowy design helps them float and move with you as you run. Thus, eliminating this agitation.
Great Ventilation
Not only are these shorts a fantastically lightweight material, they are very breathable.
For instance, mesh panels at the sides allow for ample airflow on hot days and over long hauls.
Furthermore, a perfectly comfortable liner provides additional moisture wicking properties. As a result, runners found this to be exceptionally helpful for cooling.

Runners swear by the Brooks Chaser Short for daily training.

Firstly, it may be surprising by their look, but these shorts are just as great for movement as the shortest of shorts.
Runners found this length to provide ample coverage for even the most modest among them.
In addition, the flowy, soft polyester/spandex blend aided in the swift movements and any pivot you through at them.
Loads of Pockets
This is one of those shorts that can easily go from the race to daily activities. Not only does the Chaser short feel great to wear, it can keep belongings safe in one of four different pockets.

Finally, runners will find a deep side pocket on either hip for casual items. And, an additional hidden waist pocket can conceal credit cards or ID.

While some may find a thin elastic waistband adequate, many runners prefer the comfort of a thick belt-style. And this writer agrees.

Before Picking Your Running Shorts
While it can be easy to just snag a pair of shorts for their price point or their branding, consider the following points when purchasing. Not all shorts are created equal, and price doesn’t always mean better. Before choosing your pair, consider:
- Lightweight material: Good running shorts will be lightweight and breathable materials.
- Ease of movement: Running shorts should allow for lots of movement regardless of your training style. This is why so many styles are billowy and unflattering.
- Secure pockets: If you’d like to leave your running belt at home, opt for a pair with a few zippered or deep pockets.
- Style/Fit: This is entirely up to personal preference, however some styles will be more lightweight and breathable than others.
- Built in liner: Mesh liners are there to replace underwear and reduce chaffing. They also add a large amount of breathability.
While most of these features are up to your personal preference, durability and breathability are a golden standard for running gear.
Conclusion - Round Out Post
Whether you’re heading out for a 10 miler or just a jog around the block, your shorts should stand up to the test. What you definitely don’t want is legwear that chafes, rides up or causes an emarassing wardrobe malfunction. However, with the above attributes in mind and a fair idea of what you want to see in your perfect pair, you’re well on your way to setting a record pace. So, get out there, blaze some trails and do it in style.
